STAGES Classes & Programs - The Performing Arts Academy for Kids

STAGES is pleased to offer processed-based movement, music and theatre classes for kids ages preschool through high school, in our pleasant studio on Route 1 in Scarborough, ME. Our classes run in 5-10 week “semesters” that align with the academic calendar of area schools.

Registration is now open for our 3-week December Holiday Workshop semester, and also for our Winter Semester beginning right after the New Year begins. Please browse the class listings below and register online or by calling the Studio at (207) 510-6050.

Registration opens on October 1 for our winter musical theatre production of Disney's "ALADDIN, Jr" ... filled with magic, mayhem and flying carpet rides, the show includes all of the familiar characters including Aladdin, Jasmine, and of course, the Genie! STAGES continues the commitment to the highest-quality production experience - professional music directors, choreographers, and production designers twill work alongside students to bring this wonderful show to life. Auditions will be held on November 7 and November 9 (all registrants are guaranteed a part!). Rehearsals will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:30-7:00PM, December 2 - February 5; Fully staged public performances will be held the weekend of February 6-7, 2009. Space is EXTREMELY limited

THE NUTCRACKER, DECONSTRUCTED

An introduction to a holiday classic! Students in this class will learn about and dramatically interpret the Nutcracker story; listen to selections from the symphonic suite, and will use beginning ballet techniques, creative movement, costumes and props to bring a few of the more vivid movements to life - last year's class SOLD OUT! 3 WEEK CLASS, $65

IMAGINATION SONGBOOK: HOLIDAY EDITION
Ages: 8-12yrs

Presenting a holiday-themed edition of one of the most popular STAGES "classics"...! In each IMAGINATION SONGBOOK class, students will learn the lyrics, melodies and basic choreography using holiday themed songs from popular family-friendly movies and musical theater soundtracks. Three week class: $65.

BODY BOOGIE: HOLIDAY EDITION
Ages: 3-4yrs

The holiday-themed edition of STAGES' most popular preschool class! This energetic class will have preschoolers grooving to the beat each week to classic and new favorite holiday songs. Body Boogie incorporates elements of dance, stretch, and creative movement -- helping build coordination, creativity, and introducing the idea that FITNESS is FUN! 3 Sessions: $65.

DANCE FOR MUSICAL THEATER: HOLIDAY EDITION
Ages: 5-7yrs

A fun and energetic introduction to musical theater dance styles! Students will enjoy learning tricks and techniques while dancing to holiday-themed music from Broadway Musicals! A great introduction for new musical theatre students, and a great way to keep skills fresh for young "veterans" of the stage! Three classes: $65.

BROADWAY DANCE LESSON: HOLIDAY EDITION
Ages: 8-12yrs

STAGES sell-out smash from the fall semester returns for a holiday extension! A quick introduction to dance disciplines and styles used in Broadway-style musical theatre productions. Beginners and experienced dancers will enjoy this class, which will culminate in a holiday-themed production number showcasing the new techniques learned along the way! 3 Sessions: $65.

HOLIDAY SCENEWORK
Ages: 13+yrs
Instructor: Michael Donovan & Hollye Seddon
Teen theater students will enjoy this opportunity to work with a professional director to develop characters, rehearse and perform scenes from holiday films and plays. A great way to sharpen acting - and beginning director - skills! Three classes: $65.

TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY CAROLS
Ages: 8-18yrs

Gather together in holiday cheer to learn traditional holiday carols at STAGES. Standard carols, old wassailling songs, and carols from other countries will fill the songlist. The last class will conclude with a caroling session for family and friends -- followed by hot cocoa and gingerbread for all! (last class will end at 5:30). 3 classes & caroling sesion: Cost: $65.

IMAGINATION SONGBOOK
Ages: 8-12yrs

Learn to perform songs from your favorite movies. In each IMAGINATION SONGBOOK class, students will learn the lyrics, melodies and basic choreography using songs from popular childrens movie soundtracks. FUN, stress-free introduction to a variety of musical theater productions! 5 Classes: $99 (NO CLASS MON 1/19)

A CAPPELLA KIDS
Ages: 10-18yrs

STAGES is excited to announce the formation of an all-kids a cappella singing group. The instructor (a professional music director and an alumnus of the oldest and most well-known collegiate a cappella group - the Yale Whiffenpoofs) will provide a fun and meaningful introduction to the art of a cappella singing. Explore harmonies, "beat boxing" and experience the fun and magic of a cappella! 5 introductory classes: $99. (NO CLASS MON 1/19. Choir will extend beyond winter semester if there is interest).

BODY BOOGIE

Get on your feet for one of STAGES' most popular programs! This energetic class will have preschoolers grooving to the beat each week. Body Boogie incorporates elements of dance, stretch, and creative movement -- helping build coordination, creativity, and introducing the idea that FITNESS is FUN! AGES: 3-4 years. (NOTE: This is a DROP OFF class). 6 Sessions, Cost: $112.

ACTING STAGES: ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Ages: 5-7yrs

A beginning acting class for young students! Using the adventures of "Alice in Wonderland" as a foundation, students will write their own play, and enjoy a fun look at the basics of dramatic acting -- including developing characters, building stage presence, learning lines and working together as an ensemble. The last class will showcase their original play put together by the students. 6 Classes Cost: $112.

BROADWAY DANCE LESSON

A sell-out sensation from the fall semester, "Broadway Dance" is designed for the musical theatre student who wants a quick but intense introduction to a variety of dance disciplines and styles. Beginners and experienced dancers will find tips and tricks that will be useful in auditioning, choreographing, or performing in broadway-style musical theatre productions. From the box-step to the kick-line and everything in between, come join STAGES for this fabulous class. 6 Classes: $112.

BABY BOOGIE
Ages: 18mos-2yrs

STAGES is pleased to offer this NEW class for toddlers and their parents. Baby Boogie is a structured and age appropriate creative movement class for walking infants and toddlers and their parent/caregiver. Based upon the wildly popular preschool Body Boogie class, Baby Boogie will build coordination, motor skills, creativity and listening skills - set to a different musical theme each week. Each student must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver, and each parent/caregiver in the class is expected to fully participate in the "Baby Boogie" experience. This winter, get out of the house and come to our sunny STAGES studio and boogie with your baby! Six Classes: $112.

MUSICAL THEATER SCENEWORK

Teen Students of musical theatre are invited to join this new class series at STAGES where we will be taking an in-depth look at famous scenes from Broadway Musicals. We will deconstruct the music, choreography, blocking, and discuss the significance of four big, and historically important scenes from Broadway history before re-interpreting in the final class session. 6 Classes: $112.

DRAMA GAMES
Ages: 3-4yrs

This class encourages interactive creative play through the use of age-appropriate theatre/drama games and activities. Students will learn about being comfortable in their own spotlight, as well as learning about the importance of ensemble/teamwork through zany and fun games that incorporate improvisation, tongue twisters, and many performing arts disciplines. This safe environment and encouragement from friends will help bring anyone out of their creative shell! 5 Classes - $99.

BROADWAY DECONSTRUCTED: PETER PAN
Ages: 5-7yrs

This semester we will break down (or "deconstruct") the family-friendly Broadway Musical (and classic film) of Peter Pan! Students will have the opportunity to learn the story, some music, and enough choreography and blocking to dramatically interpret the entire musical in a short presentation for family and friends by the end of the series. A fantastic and age-appropriate introduction to the magical stories of the Broadway songbook! 5 Sessions: $99.

SHOWTUNE STAGES (FEBRUARY VACATION DAYCAMP)

FEBRUARY VACATION WEEK!!! "Showtune STAGES" is a week of fun with Broadway Showtunes. In this introduction to Broadway production numbers, STAGES students will have the opportunity to work with vocal coaches and choreographers in an exciting show choir setting. The young performers will learn the lyrics, and melodies/harmonies for a series of popular Broadway standards, and choreography to go along with each. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in theatre games, acting exercises, and learn a little about the history of musical theatre in the process! During the last camp day there will be a showcase performance featuring what was learned during the week's training. One Week Only! Day Camp Cost: $225.
